Purpose

This competition, sponsored by Chamber Music in Yellow Springs (CMYS), is intended to assist emerging professional chamber ensembles in gaining recognition and to encourage younger musicians to make careers in chamber music.

Past winners include string quartets (Artis, Shanghai, Amernet, Corigliano, Fry Street), piano trios (Samaris, Guild, New China), wind ensembles (Vox Nova Quintet, Manhattan Quintet, Chamber Brass of Boston), and mixed ensembles (North Coast Trio, Elm City Ensemble).

Eligibility

The competition is open to balanced ensembles of 3 to 6 players (not soloists with accompaniment) whose average age must not exceed 30 years. No more than one member of the ensemble may have performed previously in a concert sponsored by CMYS. Recent entries have been predominantly string quartets and piano trios; other types of ensembles are equally welcome.

Entry Requirements

Please submit a clearly-labeled 40- to 70-minute CD demonstrating the breadth of the ensemble’s repertoire. We greatly prefer recordings of live performance, but studio recordings are acceptable if they are played straight through, movement by movement, and are not enhanced by digital editing. No DAT or cassette tapes, videos or minidisks, please. If your ensemble’s repertoire permits, please include at least 10 minutes drawn from the ”standard” literature.

  • a non-refundable check for $35, payable to Chamber Music Yellow Springs, as entry fee
  • an entry form including biographical information

Note: Submissions are not returned. See How To Win below for more information on entry requirements.

Finalists

Those selected as finalists will be notified by March 1, 2008. They must confirm promptly, in writing, their commitment to appear in Yellow Springs on May 4, 2008. We need to receive finalists’ publicity material and program information by March 15, 2008.

Finalists must make their own travel arrangements. CMYS will provide accommodations in private homes for the weekend. CMYS can provide a grand piano; otherwise, instruments are the responsibility of the performers.

Judging

A panel appointed by the board of CMYS will review the entries and select two finalists and several alternates. The finalists will present a live performance in Yellow Springs, Ohio, on the evening of Sunday, May 4, 2008, to the judges and a warm and appreciative audience. Three judges for the finals, all distinguished and respected musicians, will be named after the finalists are chosen.

How To Win

1. Send us an unedited live recording on CD. We prefer recordings of live performances, but studio recordings are acceptable if they are played straight through, movement by movement, and are not enhanced by digital editing. Cassette or Digital Audio Tapes (DATs), videotapes or MiniDisks cannot be accepted.

2. Choose works for which you have technique in reserve. We are more interested in musicianship than technical gymnastics.

3. Demonstrate the breadth of your repertoire by playing pieces from different periods as appropriate for your type of ensemble. Program for us as you would for a live performance, balancing unusual or avant-garde repertoire with contrasting classical styles. If your repertoire includes “standard” works, include at least a movement of a well-known piece on your submission. Please avoid show tunes, pops, and synthesized electronics.

4. Your entry should emphasize qualities such as clarity, balance, intonation, and coordination of articulation and phrasing. Every member of your ensemble should play in each piece on your recording, and no performance should include players who are not regular members of your ensemble.

5. We are looking for groups with established commitment to their ensembles. Tell us how long your group has been together and what place it holds in your developing careers. Note: there is no lower age limit for the CMYS competition (our youngest finalist so far was 19), but finalists are generally graduate students or in residency positions, and a year or two away from agented tours and recording contracts.

6. In the finals, each ensemble will play 30 to 50 minutes of music of its own choosing. The judges will award first and second prizes at the conclusion of the performances. An informal reception, dinner, and opportunity to network follow. Local public radio stations may broadcast the competition performances.

7. Everyone wins in this competition. We provide an intimate and acoustically good hall, supportive judges, cash awards, and one of the best audiences you'll ever have. Relax, enjoy and let your performance sing!
