The
Pacifica Quartet
|
The Pacifica, often heard on Saint Paul Sunday, won the 1998 Naumburg
Award and is rated among the most respected American string quartets. Kyle
MacMillan said of them, "These four closely knit musicians bring
freshness, inner vibrancy and an open, radiant sound to their playing, not
to mention a seemingly unerring ability to capture the innate mood and
character of whatever they take on." This will be a homecoming for
cellist Brandon Vamos, and the Pacifica will play for us the most
monumental of all quartets, Beethoven's Op. 130 with the Great Fugue.

Piffaro
|
This rollicking Renaissance ensemble from Philadelphia brings a
multitude of ancient instruments to each performance. Their program The
Waits of London begins with the lusty music of the street musicians of
medieval London and progresses to the transcendent works of such masters as
Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, Anthony Holborne, and Thomas Weelkes.

The Ying
Quartet
|
The four Ying siblings from Chicago are the quartet in residence at
Harvard and Eastman. They won the Naumburg Award in 1993, a Grammy in 2006,
and are leaders in commissioning new works and bringing the joy of chamber
music to a wide public. The Los Angeles Times said, "The Ying Quartet
came as close to the ideal as possible, delivering chamber music of
astonishing, refreshing exaltation and exhilaration."

The Vogler
Quartet of Berlin
|
Top recording artists in Europe and 1986 Evian winners, the Vogler Quartet
does not often tour the US. We loved them when they first played for CMYS
in 1989, and they have kindly agreed to make a sidetrip to Yellow Springs
from their 2008 Carnegie Hall appearance. The Financial Times described
them as ". . . hugely impressiveabove all because of their sound:
super-rich, communicatively forward and muscular." They will premiere
a new string quartet written for them by Yellow Springs composer Drew
Hemenger and commissioned by CMYS with the support of the Yellow Springs
Community Foundation.
